autumnal stash-busting

I dug into the stash and pulled out a skein of chunky orange yarn to knit up a cute pumpkin in honor of autumn.

Pattern: Carol's Pumpkin Pattern, by Carol Sanders
Yarn: Lion Wool-Ease Thick & Quick in Spice (a dark, heathered orange)
Needles: Clover US 11 24-inch circular

This is going to be a quick knit! I had forgotten how quickly bulky yarn knits up.

Here are a couple finished pumpkins on display.
I found the pattern online on a yarn store webpage, but I haven't been able to retrace my steps.

If you're interested in the pattern, leave me a comment and I'll send it to you as a Word file. It calls for worsted or DK yarn and 13-inch circs. I'm adapting the pattern to use the yarn I already have. :-)

I like that shade of Woolease. I think Woolease is one of my favorite non-natural yarns if not the favorite.

NB: I should have used 13-inch circs. The last few rounds were a bit of a struggle!

Carol's Pumpkin Pattern

Materials:

- DK or Worsted Yarn (1 skein should do it)

- small amount of scrap yarn for stem,

- 16inch circular needle (size 5 for DK, size 7 for Worsted),

- 1 set of double point needles to match scrap yarn.

NOTE: This is a fun knitting project where gauge and finished size don't matter. Any size and shape is fine. It is preferable to knit your fabric rather firmly, so that when you stuff your pumpkin the stuffing doesn't show through.

With circular needles cast on a multiple of 11 stitches. (Each group of 11 stitches represents one section of the pumpkin.) You decide how many sections your pumpkin has. Join, being careful not to twist stitches, and place a marker at beginning of round. K9, P2; repeat around. Continue in pattern for a total of 7 to 9 inches.

Shape Top:

Decrease Round: K1, ssk, k3, k2tog., K1, P2; repeat around.

K7, P2; repeat around for 3 rounds.

Decrease Round: K1, ssk, k1, K2tog., K1, P2; repeat around.

K5, P2; repeat around for 3 rounds.

Decrease Round: K1, *SK2P; P2; repeat around. *SK2P = slip 1, K2tog pass slip stitch over.

K3, P2; repeat around for 1 round.

Bind off.

With yarn threaded to a tapestry needle, draw cast on's together to close bottom. Stuff pumpkin. Draw top of pumpkin together in same was as bottom.

With stem yarn and double point needles cast on 28 - 30 stitches and join. Work in stockinette stitch for 2 - 2 1/2 inches, decreasing a few stitches at 1 1/4 inch. Bind off. Sew in place at top of pumpkin to cover hole where stitches are drawn together.

Decorate with ribbon or whatever.

Thank you so much! You're fabulous and I can't wait to try this out. Ooooo! A visit to my LYS will be on the agenda for Friday morning. And happy knitting throughout the weekend. Yay!

Glad to be of service! Sewing together the bottom using the cast-on stitches was a little messy, but I think it would work better with worsted or DK yarn.

If you feel like messing with the pattern, you might want to add a little pumpkin bottom "shaping."

Hi SP,

Thanks for the sock pattern link! That doesn't look too challenging for me.
