Sewing together the bottom using the cast-on stitches was a little messy, but I think it would work better with worsted or DK yarn.

If you feel like messing with the pattern, you might want to add a little pumpkin bottom "shaping."Jodihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15122120372734286698noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32040200.post-1161210743755550702006-10-18T17:32:00.000-05:002006-10-18T17:32:00.000-05:00Thank you so much! Any size and shape is fine. It is preferable to knit your fabric rather firmly, so that when you stuff your pumpkin the stuffing doesn't show through.

With circular needles cast on a multiple of 11 stitches. (Each group of 11 stitches represents one section of the pumpkin.) You decide how many sections your pumpkin has. Join, being careful not to twist stitches, and place a marker at beginning of round. K9, P2; repeat around. Continue in pattern for a total of 7 to 9 inches.

Shape Top:

Decrease Round: K1, ssk, k3, k2tog., K1, P2; repeat around.

K7, P2; repeat around for 3 rounds.

Decrease Round: K1, ssk, k1, K2tog., K1, P2; repeat around.

K5, P2; repeat around for 3 rounds.

Decrease Round: K1, *SK2P; P2; repeat around. *SK2P = slip 1, K2tog pass slip stitch over.

K3, P2; repeat around for 1 round.

Bind off.

With yarn threaded to a tapestry needle, draw cast on's together to close bottom. Stuff pumpkin. Draw top of pumpkin together in same was as bottom.

With stem yarn and double point needles cast on 28 - 30 stitches and join. Work in stockinette stitch for 2 - 2 1/2 inches, decreasing a few stitches at 1 1/4 inch. Bind off. Sew in place at top of pumpkin to cover hole where stitches are drawn together.

Decorate with ribbon or whatever.

Copyright 2006 Carol Sanders- Permission to redistribute granted provided that this copyright notice is included.
