summer's bounty

numero uno
If you're a Doctor Who fan at all, you need to go check this out immediately (hat tip to Hilary).

 ----------------------------------------------------------

in the kitchen
One of Paul's coworkers generously shared a bounty of tomatoes from her garden with us.

Inspired by a certain rooster, I made a French tomato tart.  Delicious!  I used plenty of strong, French whole grain mustard, chives, fresh goat cheese, and a drizzle of Wisconsin honey.  An aged goat cheese would be delicious, too, but I was feeling budget-conscious (and too lazy to trek any further than Trader Joe's).  I, too, cut down a bit on the butter in the dough, and it was plenty wet without any additional water.
 ----------------------------------------------------------
off the needles
Already off the needles and onto my feet!  An actual pair of socks -- first pair since August 2007.  Granted they're more like footies, but still, it feels like a milestone. Or perhaps a turning point?  We'll see.

Yarn: Koigu KPPM, 1 skein (175 yds)
Needles: US 2.5 Knit Picks Harmony DPNs

Details:
A clever little pattern with a very unusual construction technique!  There's some seaming midway through, and you have to pick up some stitches pretty carefully to avoid getting holes, but it's not bad.  The socks are cute and comfy, and they go well with my Danskos.  A slightly smaller ankle opening would be nice, but I'm not sure that I care enough to fool around with the pattern.  I'll definitely be making more of these, as they're quick and useful.  I'd like to think that this pattern might help me make a dent in my stash of sock yarn, but it takes so few yards that it isn't really the case!  I had a bit of yarn leftover from my 1 skein of Koigu, so no need to be stressed about running out of yarn.

I think you need the shiny metallic reflect-y Danskos. Have you seen them? They look silvery in one light and change depending on how the light hits them. And you need to knit plenty of these socks to wear.

And the tomato tart recipe sounds yummy. I was just thinking that I have been tomatoes out and you introduce me to a tart recipe that is basically dairy free. I have to pick tomatoes in the morning and was dreading it. (I have 8 quarts of tomato sauce to freeze tomorrow too.) I was going to give the tomatoes to a friend for her to use, Now I will have to keep a few and pick up some chevre to make this tart. Did you make the pate brisse? I am thinking maybe a puff pastry for the shell or phyllo.... Ideas .....

Adorable socks! We Washingtonians know how to keep footwear practical. Also: yum! I need to get on the tart making.

Love the little socks, I've been thinking about those, your finished pair is just one more little push in that direction!

The tart sounds fantastic, especially the interesting addition of the mustard.

Oh I have to make these socks! They are so great and I just got my first pair of actual dansko clogs! I have 3 pairs of mary janes but just got the clogs and I adore them. And while I love the sock-less look, completely sockless is always torture on my feet, these socks are the perfect solution, thanks so much for sharing!

I love those little footies. I would never have thought to make a pair, but since I live in my Danskos all Winter, these seem perfect. That tart looks amazing.

I've only seen Turkish slippers done in stranded colorwork. These are cute in handpainted yarn.

Oh, and months ago you mentioned The IT Crowd TV show, and I put it on the Netflix streaming queue. My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed it, so thanks! It was fun to see some Mighty Boosh actors in there, since we'd recently gotten into that.

I was looking online for waterproof shoe recommendations to wear in New York, and Danskos was right in there. Chicago! Makes sense - no wonder you like 'em and yes, those socks are perfect. Now the question - are Danskos made for walking?

I've been wearing my Dansko oiled leather pro's for the last three years, along with other Dansko clogs without socks with a long dress or my jeans rolled. These socks look comfortable and look nice with the clog. I will have to check this out.
